Engineer Maria das Dores Correia Pinto, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of the Data Protection Agency (APD), represented Angola on the Lusophone Panel of the 16th Privacy and Personal Data Protection Seminar, held from August 25 to 27, 2025, in São Paulo, Brazil.
During her speech on the first day of the event, the Chairwoman highlighted the significant progress Angola has made in regulating digital privacy, emphasizing the APD's active role in supervising and enforcing national legislation. Since the effective start of its activities in 2019, the Agency has consolidated its work with concrete measures aimed at ensuring greater security and responsibility in the processing of personal data.
The APD's trajectory includes the implementation of the 2020–2024 Strategic Plan, the launch of awareness and supervision campaigns, and the start of the sanctioning phase, which has included entities from various sectors of the national economy. Currently, several ongoing cases reinforce the Agency's commitment to protecting citizens' rights.
The APD Chairwoman also addressed the challenges faced, such as the shortage of specialized personnel, the need for continuous training, and the strengthening of institutional capacity. She also highlighted the importance of political support, cooperation with peer entities, and raising awareness amongst organizations as fundamental pillars for the success of the APD's mission.
The Lusophone Panel, moderated by Renata Mielli of the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (CGI.br), included representatives from Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe, Mozambique, Portugal, Brazil, and Angola. It served as a space for exchanging experiences and aligning practices amongst Portuguese-speaking countries.
Angola's presence at this international forum reaffirms the country's commitment to a more conscious, ethical, and secure digital citizenry, positioning itself as a regional reference in the defense of privacy and personal data.
