Within the framework of their partnership, the Council of Europe, the Global Action on Cybercrime Enlarged and the Network of African Data Protection Authorities will organize, on January 7, 2021, the workshop N°3 of the series of thematic workshops on data protection about "Political Campaigns and Elections". The purpose of this workshop is to explore and discuss key issues, challenges and considerations in the use of personal data in political campaigns, including voter surveillance, drawing from experiences in Africa and beyond.
December 8, 2020 workshop focused on issues, challenges and considerations of national digital identity systems. The importance of establishing a discussion on this topic is the ability of individuals to prove who they are, which is crucial to multiple aspects of their lives and daily activities. Increasingly, birth registration systems are seen as a means of establishing a legal identity so that an individual is visible before the state.
The workshop on 5th December 2020 about the right to data protection in the digital age began at 3pm GMT+1 with opening remarks of the Network of African Data Protection Authorities and the Council of Europe. The theme covered several topics moderated by experts and specialists. In particular, the discussion on the challenges to privacy and data protection rights in the past, present and future by Joseph A. Cannataci, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Privacy.
The Council of Europe co-organizes online workshops with the Network of African Data Protection Authorities on a monthly basis about relevant topics for the African region.
A series of online workshops around personal data protection was launched by the Council of Europe in support of the African Network of Personal Data Protection Authorities between November 2020 and March 2021. The workshop themes were selected based on the principles set out in the 108+ Convention.
The Personal Data Protection Authority of Mali received on December 19 and 20, 2019 a delegation of the African Network of Personal Data Protection Authorities (RAPDP) led by its President Marguerite OUEDRAOGO BONANE, also President of the Committee on InformationTechnology and Freedoms (CIL) of Burkina Faso during a working and friendship visit. According to the president of the network, this meeting represents an important first step in a project that the delegation intends to carry out with the personal data protection authorities members of the network.
The African network will hold its 2019 general assembly meeting in Ghana, alongside the International Data Protection & Privacy Conference (Africa Region), 24-27 June 2019.

At the 40th ICDPPC (International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners) in Brussels, the NADPA/RAPDP held a side event to bring together representatives of African authorities to take stock of the progress made by the Network and discuss future action.
The gathering was also an opportunity to speak with representatives from the United Nations, the UN Global Pulse and the GSM Association who wished to talk to the African authorities about possible avenues for collaboration.
The National Data Protection Authority (CNDP) is staging an international conference on 22 February 2018 in Casablanca on the protection of privacy and personal data in Africa.
